I was raised Catholic and my best friend was Jewish. I just couldn't understand how "my God" would be sending her and everyone else to hell because they followed different rules. It made me question alot of things and so I asked my Mom (she was raised in a different faith and had to convert in order to marry my Dad). My Mom said something that changed everything for me. She said that there are many different roads that lead to the same destination and that there are many mansions in God's house. One is not necessarily better than the other. That sparked my interest in different belief systems and to this day I refuse to look at things in a religious sense but more in the spiritual sense of all religions.

You said religion - not spirituality - so I'm saying why I turned away from organized religion. I remember exactly when I was shocked out of my beliefs. I was attending a Sunday school class and the discussion was about evangelizing and spreading the gospel throughout the world. We were then told that after everyone had heard the gospel, those who chose not to accept Jesus Christ into their hearts as their lord and savior would be doomed to hell forever. It seemed so unfair - then and now. I began exploring other faiths and lean mostly toward Buddhism and earth based religions but am pretty much a free spirit.

Since you said religion and not God or spirituality, there are not enough hours in the day, nor bytes in cyberspace to list all of the reasons everyone should turn away from "religion" and simply start loving each other

I'm not turned away from religion per se. However I am very turned off of and away from the christian religion. However, I have no offense to report from them. What turned me away after years of "being on fire for god"? Simply put....study. I looked at what the bible said about the characteristics of god and I did not like what I found. I looked at the contradictions. I studied history, archeology, other philosophies, psychology and more. It broke my heart, but led me to one conclusion...the christian religion does not hold water in MY opinion. However, I envy christians...they have community and many of them are fulfilled in their beliefs. I am still seeking...my journey.

My parents were rude at home, but polite in church. Church people and parents told me I was going to hell if I did not conform. The mixed messages, caused me to read the bible for myself and ask my parents and the church questions. Found out quickly that asking questions was inappropriate. I wasn't comfortable with "conforming to hypocrisy". I decided to keep my faith in God and give up organized religion for the time being.

I thought about it, and realized that religious beliefs don't actually make any logical sense, nor are they based in objective reality.
Some people can feel good about believing those sorts of things, but I have a policy of being honest - both with other people, and with myself. I cannot believe things when i know that they do not make sense.

Nothing happened. I never even turned toward religion. Logic prevailed.

My parents shoved it down my throat and then as I grew older they kept tabs on whether or not I went to Mass on Sundays. I nearly lost my faith. So, I moved away, studied my faith and am now stronger in my Catholic religion. I am now Catholic for me not for anyone else.

I took a good look at the world around me, pondered the question for a while, and eventually came to the conclusion that god doesn't exist.
