Lengthwise or crosswise?

I cut off both ends, then cut in half (so you can see the rings) and peel. I slice what I need into rings and then chop from there. Unused part goes in a ziploc bag in the fridge!

Normally crosswise, put in a plastic wrap and hang it in the kitchen.

It doesn't matter which way you cut the onion just make sure you cut it with the skin on it and then pop it in a zip lock bag so that it stays fresh and another hint but if you don't have good knife skills don't try this but if you cut an onion under water you won't cry but be careful I lost a finger figuring this one out lol just kidding

Length..plus that way, you get bigger chunks that you can use or cut into smaller cubes.
