For about 8 years now, I have wanted to put an American flag (pole and all) in my front yard. I haven't yet because the responsibility of it I do not know. I think it should be lowered every evening and put away and not left out in the rain. Can it be flown at half, if a death is your family or friend, or is that for only national figures? If you do leave it up at night, it needs to be spotlighted....right....?

I just want to make sure if I do take the step of displaying the flag, that I do it right. If you know all of the rules or a link I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

http://www.flagandbanner.com has an excellent web page describing proper flag etiquette. Hope you decide to fly a flag in your yard. Show everyone that you are a proud American.... there are more of us than you may think.

This might sound like a jerky answer, but its not meant to be: if you buy a flag, they come with directions on proper display ettiquete.

Generally no you may not fly it at half mast if someone in your family dies. If they are retired military then 3 days it may be done. It must be taken down each day before dark or may stay flying if there are light shining on it 24 hours.

You have it right. One other thing, never ever ever let the flag touch the ground. If it does you're supposed to dispose of it.
