Is it hard to become a fighter pilot if you didn't go to the naval or air force academy but just a regular university? It's always been my dream to be a fighter pilot but I couldn't make it into the academy because of my citizenship status.

It should not be hard. Just have perfect vision and score high on your asvab. Take a course in military history and rotc (reserve officers training course) in the university so you can become an officer.

I am in Air Force ROTC at a regular university. It is very possible to get a pilot slot, but also very competitive. It is also possible to go to OTS or OCS after college to train to be an officer and then get a pilot slot. You can also get a slot after having commissioned as an officer.

After not getting into the academy, I would recommend looking into the ROTC programs (naval or air force), if you are still in college. If not, try for OTS or OCS and try for a pilot slot from there. Good luck!

My husband is a fighter pilot in the AF. He didn't go to the AF Academy but he worked his butt off otherwise to get a slot by studying and working constanly in OTS and during training. It's highly highly competitive and unfortunately there are a lot of politics involved... who you know or who you're related to. But it can be done.

do you have your Citizenship now? or will have it before you are too old to apply for an Aviation slot? You cannot be an Officer(and by extension, an Aviator) without being a US Citizen.

that being said.. what's your degree in? what's your GPA? what's your physical condition? do you have demonstrated Leadership skills? extracurricular activities? in other words.. what can you bring to the table that will make you stand out from the thousands of others wanting the few Aviation slots available? and of those slots, even fewer are for pointy ended fast movers.

ROTC yes, but make sure it's a reputable program first. Not all ROTC programs are good, and bear in mind, you're not competing against other people in your school, you're competing against everyone else in the nation trying for the same thing. So pick a good school.
