you don't - and yes, it is a habit.
the ancient greeks ate only twice a day, for instance.
In any case, you're supposed to eat at least 5 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones. It's easier on your digestive system and therefore healthier.
The three meals a day just fits in well with current schedules:
wake up - breakfast
mid-day - lunch
before bed - dinner/supper.

Because the way women used to have to cook and work in the house, they didn't have time to cook anymore meals (fire, wood stove, etc) Laundry by hand. Water from having to get it from a well or creek.
The men would not take the time to come in from fields and working to eat more meals but had to have enough to produce the energy to work that we do with machines now.
MOST of us now need less food than they did but we probably eat and have more then they did. Kinda backwards huh? Habit for 100's of years has kept it that way PLUS our jobs only give 1 break with enough time to eat a meal.

I think the 3 meals a day started with the way people worked. Get up and eat breakfast ( a must), stop at noon and eat when the sun is hottest, a final meal when the sun sets and it is too dark to work.
It is actually better for you if you can eat smaller meals more often during the day.

We eat 3 times a day so that we may use up the energy until our next meal. I we are inactive then we dont need to eat as much.

I think it's good for your metabolism to eat at regular intervals. So breakfast kick-starts your metabolism, and lunch and dinner keep it going. Plus, I think it's healthy to maintain a regular eating schedule so you don't overeat or snack too much, which is probably why most people try to stick to 3 meals a day.

Morning Eat
Halfway through the day Eat
Before you rest for tommorow Eat
Its commom sense I suppose but its mostly just a very old never ending trend.
It also gives the body time to digest and absorb any nutrients!

People don't have to eat three times a day but its just how our diet is supposed to be. I dont eat three times a day, many eat much more and many eat much less. Its different for everyone :)
