Find out how to get to I-78 from NY, probably thru NJ. Take 78 west into Pennsylvania where it'll turn into I-70 West. Then you go through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and all the way till I-70 ends in Utah at I-15. Then take I-15 South to Las Vegas. From there you can follow local signs. This route will take you through the Beautiful Rocky Mountains and the Red Rocks of Utah and into sin city which gets you very close. On the way back you start out on I-40 in arizona which merges into Route 66 which angles you northeast till you hit St. Louis, from there you follow the same route back into NY.
Both routes are equally efficient, by going this way you see: Columbus, OH., Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver and Las Vegas. On the way back you see Alburquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and back to St. Louis (where you see the arch each way). I believe the northern route through the Rockies (must see!) is 200 miles longer than the southern route home but it is worth the extra 3 hours and half a tank of gas. I've made this trip many times. Of course you should mapquest it or take an atlas. Happy trails to you!

Most efficient route from new york is by taking a plane to Phoenix and renting a car...then go up interstate 10 until you hit Flagstaff. Then you will want to crash out at the Monte Vista Hotel (978-770-6871, 100 N, San Francisco St., Flagstaff, AZ- 86001) in downtown Flagstaff so you will be rested. Take the advice from the maps that you will have with you or look up the link below. I think it is easier to just take out of the parking lot at the hotel and go left onto Birch Avenue., then take a right onto Columbus Ave./US 180...about 49 miles there...then turn slightly Left to stay on US 180, taking a right onto US 180/AZ 64 , 27 miles, then turn left onto Center Road, Left onto
Village Loop Drive, Turn Left to stay on Village Loop Dr....and there ya are....

You will see amazing things especially if you plan your trip at the end of September or all through October....

The Hotel Monte Vista is really old but very cool....

Have a great time!

all wrong answers. The easiest way is:
Over the George Washington Bridge, Interstate 80 west -1700mi or so
Thru NJ,PA,OH,IN,IL, IA,NB
At Julesberg Nebraska Make a left ,Interstate 76 West to Denver
Interstate 70 west over the Rockies
30 miles west of th Co/Ut state line state road 128 south to Moab UT
US 163 South thru Monument Valley
At the Junction of US 160 in Kayenta AZ make a left
across the Navajo Nation to US 89 south [it's a" T" intersection"]
Left on 89 to Cameron AZ -20
Right on 64 and uphill to Grand canyon national park- 40 miles
Flying
As a rule flying into Las Vegas is cheaper than flying to Phoenix and rental cars are cheaper in Vegas
Fly to Vegas fly from Vegas to Grand Canyon on Scenic Airlines
Scenic has about 5 diiferent tour packages
if you tell them you want the cheapest on the will get you from the Airport to the rim as part of it
Driving from Vegas
head to Hoover Dam
US 93 to Kingman
I-40 east to Williams Az and then 64 into the Park
BTW blockhead you have typo, it's 17 not 10 and i agree The Monte Vista cool place to be.

You take a plane from JFK to St. Louis. From there you can catch a hop with one of the many families heading west via connestogas and mule train. Be careful not to get hooked into one of those polygamist groups along the way. I hear it is rampant out there and they are always trying to recruit and reform young trippers like yourself. You be careful now, ya hear!
It's dangerous in them badlands...ye be treading, ah, tripping to big territory with bigggggg rattlesnakes en stuff.
