If you're moving to Norfolk for the naval base, you'll LOVE it! Its a beautiful city, lots of tradition and people are so friendly! The ocean and beaches are wonderful (you're just a hop from Virginia Beach). Its a huge military base (one of several in the vicinity), so you'll make loads of friends. Lots of stuff to do with military discounts - the whole city makes a lot of its living off military personnel, so people are very fond of them. Honestly, never met such warm, gracious people anywhere else. I was really surprised (but pleasantly so!).

Enjoy the seafood too - its some of the best in the world!

Good luck with the move. If I recall, the military moved my friends. It was nice that they didn't have to find a moving company. The area is beautiful. I loved Virginia Beach. If you get a chance, go to as many places down there as you can (ie: Williamsburg, Bushgardens, local festivals). Once you move, you may never go back. If you like seafood, local fish shops are the best food. Stay away from chain restaurants for seafood. I want to thank you for your sacrifice to our country. May God Bless You!

Take a second off the pipe and ask some of the wives of the guys your husband serves with, who have been stationed there before, on what to expect down in VA.
