A guy is selling one for only $20K with only 25K miles.

It gets 9 miles to a gallon.

My work is 25 miles each way = 50 miles or 5.5 gallons per day.

So it would cost me $18 of gas each day for work. My Honda cost me about $5.50 per day.

Is it worth it?

As you know, Hummer was designed by Chrysler/Jeep and sold when they divested. GM ended up with them and as far as I am concerned really destroyed what was good. The present and newer designed are nothing but useless GM garbage. The original was never designed for civilian population. At the present and future costs of gas for this piece of crap should deter you from buying. If you really want one wait until next summer when the used prices really drop because of the cost of fuel. You will see a repeat of the seventies land boat used car sales. People won't be able to give them away. If you really can afford it, buy it and warehouse it, because in thirty years or so it will be a classic such as the 1969 Caddy. That would be the only reason I can see to buy one. GM would really have something if they would drop a good economical diesel in them. Hey Mr. Banks come up with a drop in turbo diesel for the Hummer.
After all that I give you a very emphatic NO, stay with the Honda. Save some money and buy the new Challenger, you will like it better.

My first question is which model of hummer is it: H1, H2, or the new H3. Given the mileage you stated, it's probably the H1. Here's what I can tell you. Your horsepower will probably be better in your Honda, for one (or only minimally better when it comes to the numbers), but your torque will be much higher. Here's why: the Hummer H1 uses a turbodeisel engine (that's right you will be buying deisel fuel and possibly a higher grade of it too to keep from ruining your engine). This means that your price of gas may be slightly lower. However, that 9 mpg is probably about the same, gasoline or deisel. Another thing about the hummer (any model of it), it's an exceptionally talented vehicle offroad or in extremely bad weather conditions. Unless you think you would regularly drive it offroad, or live somewhere in the northern U.S or Canada where we get a heck of a lot more snow, or live somewhere that is regularly flooded most every year, it's not worth it. It's like paying insurance on something that will NEVER happen. To me, as much as I love all forms of S.U.V's and trucks, you've done the math, I've given you more information (which you probably already know though), and hopefully you've come to the same conclusion I have: it's really not going to be worth it. May look nice, but definitely not worth it.

Based on the price I am going to guess that this is a H2 or H3? Both of these are just glorified boxes placed on Tahoe (H2) or Colorado (H3) frames. You would be better to buy a Tahoe as you will get the same ride for slightly better gas mileage. If this is an H1, then you are getting one heck of a deal. There is a new H1 sitting on the Hummer lot here and lists for $145,000. The down side to the H1 is it was never designed to be used on the highway or in town. The H1 is truly a waste of an excellent design unless you are a serious off-roader. If you want something for off-roading and decent around town, get a jeep. The wrangler is very capable off-road, the down side being storage and low gas mileage. Even better, for a daily driver with storage and decent gas mileage, the Cherokee (not produced anymore) is great. Don't know of anyone who uses the Grand Cherokee off-road personally but know that it has been designed and extensively tested by Jeep for off-road use. For the rest (Liberty, Commander, Compass) have only seen them used as yuppie soccer-mobiles but would bet that they are designed with off-road in mind as well. Anyway hope this helps.

Buy a couple of them. Who cares? Ask a question like that in Jeep? Buy 3 Hummers!

What you trying to do?
Go rooten in the mud n' dirt? Jeep or Range Rover
Never leave highway? BMW (I'm sure they have a 4X4.)
Impress/depress the neighbors? In a word, Amphibious
Go'en huntten with all my Red Neck friends? Chevy Suburban

As you have eloquently made out the case for not getting it and are still undecided there must be something about them you really like. Why not go the whole hog and buy a tank? Personally I'd rather stick with my Land-rover Defender - best 4 by 4 by far and 25 mpg

No not at all unless you a need one to get around in the winter alot and must drive in snowy muddy conditions .

They are great for off road are very powefull can pull all kinds of thins out of mud snow ect . Sarry a lot of stuff yes stuff that is what happens you put all kind of stuff in it . or at least I did well us men put suff in our pick ups and 4x4s anyways .
If you want a 4x4 and need one in the winter on occasion , do not have or want to spend alot on gas get a hybrid 4x4 Toyota makes a decent one and it gets good milage I think close to 30 mpg not sure . I do not own it just rode in it . I drove it could not tell if it was a hybrid or not , handled well on a rough road . .
If you need to hual alot of Stuff and horse power a 1 ton pick up or dup is a better bette get a diesel for better milage I have a Ford F350 and a f350 Dump for some work truck anda range al are good trucks hual alot of stuff the diesles get good milage the Ranger gets good mileage is a standared . all come with ACand CD player as standard equipment .

Of if you want to get good milage but ar not thrilled about a hybrid a Subaru AWDS are ok not great not a full on off road vehicals either they are popular with the trendy outodoors activties folks who hate my F 350s
Why do you want a hummer any ways? are you plannig on lots of rugged off road drivving ? that is all they are real usuefull for or in snowy places that have a short spring and summer like where I live .
But even here in Aspen ( they are big in Vail the town with 1 70 through th middle of it and butt uglly cookie cutter houses cant miss the place )
cant miss the place ) fullsized pick up that huls more for less and get better milage . or a SUV of any sort the hybrids are poular good milage good clearance and handle well in snow or mud

Cars like that are really unsafe, partly cos they look really safe, and the people driving them think they are invicible, drive like nutters and they end up rolling them or smashing them into something and then realise they squish like tin-cans. Also the front being so raised means you are far more likely to seriously injure anyone you hit. Kids sometimes run out into the road, when you are in a hummer you cant see them quite so well and will probably stop slower as your car is really heavy and then rather than rolling over the front of your car their head will be smashed into it as it is higher and they will likely die at a much lower speed than other, lower cars.
Statistically cars like hummers are involved in more accidents and more of those accidents are fatal, but those are British Statistics for 4 by 4s I believe. But it will likely be a similar story for you.
Its not all about the cost.

No it is not worth it! Hummer values are dropping fast. They are awfull on gas and they are not functional. Why else would someone sell one for 25K? You can lease a new Jeep Grand Cherokee for $299/mo. They get 20+ mpg.

Well think about it. Are you buying the Hummer for attention, Ego? If so , then you will be paying 1/2 of your paycheck in Gas. $18 per day or $5.50 per day. How about a happy medium $11.00 per day? My answer, not worth it!
