RAW beef or lamb has the highest concentration of natural iron and other vitamins and minerals and is good for your pet. Do a search on B A R F raw feeding as raw food alone is insufficient.
Make sure you don't allow him to get fleas, keep him treated with a reputable product they cause anaemia (low iron or haemaglobin) because they're sucking out the red blood. NO garlic or onion either, this is toxic and causes anaemia. Also an ascorbic acid (vitamin C) supplement is a useful supplement and helps the body to absorb iron. Go to your petstore to buy it and get correct dosages.
ETS: I saw people have been saying liver so I edited to add...Liver IS high in iron, however it is an organ used for detoxifying, so if the animal has been exposed to a lot of chemicals, they may be more concentrated in the liver, watch the source.
Liver contains high amounts of vitamin A an overdose is seriously toxic. Beta carotene is synthesised into vitamin A in the body.Toxic doses of Vitamin A could produce muscle weakness and bone abnormalities.
One or two meals of liver per month is sufficient.

non doggy food choice would be popcorn
check labels at the store for iron fortified dog food or start him on a vitamin every day they make them for dogs and most stores carry them.
Our dog loves popcorn, broccoli, spinach, and such so he gets plenty of iron.
For those above that said human iron pills beware you can easily poision a dog with those the dosage for pets is very different. Search online for dog + iron poisoning you will find stories about this sad fact.

Red meat and some kinds of beans. Any decent dog food should have all the iron he needs, though, and too much can be bad. I think your vet needs to give you some more detailed guidelines.

Just like humans, dogs have vitamin supplements too. You can purchase them as well as other pet specific items at pet stores. Also-- most dog food has iron in it and you might want to look to see if you can find one that has more than others. Good luck and always remember to take care of your pets and in turn they will provide you and your family with many years of love and security!!

red meat so maby a diet that includes a dog food with some beef in it.or bones from your local butcher, most beef bones have marrow very rich in vitamins and can help if your dog is low in iron. just make sure they are like leg bones be sure to ask you vet if this is ok though

Check your dog's diet of iron content then you can check for you dog's average breed requirements online. I'd say buy a specialty dog food that meets those requirements so you dont have this problem again.
