children's motrin will work best for his pain and swelling..
for the chewable tablets-take 4 every 6-8 hours (no more than 4 doses in 24 hours)
for the liquid suspension 2tsp every 6-8 hours (no more than 4 doses in 24 hours)
use aloe vera gel on the burn. pls do not use lotions or food product or vinegar-these things will actually trap in heat and cause dehydration and can make the burn worse
take cool showers or baths-hot water will cause the burn to get worse.
make sure he drinks lots of water and/or gatorade to replace the salt and water his body lost while being out in the sun....

As the two previous posts have indicated you should use aloe vera gel to relieve the burning sensation. If you shop at a larger pharmacy you should be able to find a sun-burn gel that contains not only aloe vera, but lidocaine as well. Lidocaine is a medication (similar to what the dentist gives you) that numbs the skin. The gel will have to be applied several times of day. The bottle may warn you not to use the gel over a large surface area of the body - in large doses lidocaine can creates changes in heart rhythms. This is a rare complication and would result from an obvious abuse of the gel. Also, as important as the gel is water - essential in the body's defense against the inflammatory response to the sunburn. Good Luck.

Give him children's morton. Follow the dose info on the package. That will help with the pain and any swelling he may have. From his skin use an aloe vera gel or the plant itself. Do not use vinegar like some people will suggest as it will only trap in the heat. You will need to have your son take cool baths the hot water will make the burn worse but don't make the water cold as this could make his body temp get too low and cause other problems. If the pain doesn't ease up you should take him to see a doctor.

Aloe Vera, the 99.8% pure aloe gel. Also, a secret is to puree in a blender some raw potatoes and put the puree all over the affected area. Don't let your child out uncovered tomorrow or for the next 3 days. When the skin peels off, be also v. careful to sun exposure. When he recovers, buy at least 60+SPF for him.

Aloe or Noxzema (I think I spelled it wrong)
The real question is if your son is so fair skin how come he wasn't wearing sunscreen mom? If he is swimming all day you should have been reapplying it every hour because it comes right off no matter if it says waterproof or not. Do you have any idea how damaging the sun is to young kids. I hope you and your son have both learned from this.

A really cold bath (like turn the knob all the way to cold or put a lot NOT a bath full of ice). Use moisturizer products that have Aloe Vera, Vitamin A, C, E. Hope I helped!

A lukewarm bath with vinegar in the water will help to take the heat out of the burn. After the bath, he might smell 'pickled' but he will feel better. Aloe Vera will help keep the burn at bay while tylenol will help him rest. Been there done that with myself and my kids.

A solution of white vinegar and cool water. Apply it with a spray bottle. Do not rub it on. Aloe Vera helps with healing. He should drink plenty of water. See a doctor if the burn is severe.

Aloe vera is by far the best remedy that I know of. It has sap that eases pain and inflammations from burns, cuts, and eczema. Plus, it feels so good once you put it on sunburn--it has a sort of "cooling/tingling" feeling to it. I reccomend getting the gel type :)
