I do not consume tobacco, and I do not smoke at all. However, it is evident that the previous owner of these books was a big smoker--you can smell the tobacco upon entering the room. The books are 24 years old, and the stench probably accumulated over time. In addition, I am underage.

Unless the smell itself is something you just can't take, being in the same room with the books will have absolutely no effect on you. The smoke is within the binding of the books and the books are probably bound with a cloth material...it of course will retain the smell of smoke for some time. Even the pages will retain the smell as well as have brownish yellow stains or coloring to them.

If the smell is so wretched that you just have to rid yourself of it...place the books in plastic bags along with a Scholls odor eater insole ( yup!). The odor eater will absorb the smells from the books and you should be able to live with them in the same room afterwards. Depending on the number of books you need to fumigate...you may need a few sets of the odor eaters...but it may be well worth the effort and cost. The books can stay in the bag for up to 48 hours...

Check out the net as well for home remedies and recommendations from collectors of books, that might be just as effective. Make certain tho that the remedies are "antique" and collector friendly, spraying them with products or washing them with anything...etc will decrease or totally destroy any value they may have...you don't want the books becoming damaged as you may have ones that are worth a few bucks :) err on the side of caution.

Good luck

Ok, this whole question is soooo weird on so many levels. You and your mom share a bunk bed and dad sleeps on the couch? How terrible for you, not only to sneak out but to have some privacy as a 16 yr old girl! Be thankful you can't go to those parties, they only lead to trouble anyways. Consider yourself lucky that you'll get your beauty sleep and be awake enough to get good grades...it will pay off in the end.

No do not sleep in the same room as them or u might get 2nd hand smoke poisoning. In fact, get them out of your house and burn them so they don't contaminate anybody else. I would also go to the doctor to get checked out. You might have acquired some sort of lung disease from the books already.

Air the books..... It should be safe, like unless you have *terrible* asthma. Put them in a plastic bag and that will contain the odour.

one thing u may try is setting them open-faced out in the sun for a bit, and fluff pages frequently. May help remove smell =)
