He has been an atheist for years, but he asked that I pray for her. Please pray that I will be able to comfort him and be an effective witness. Pray that his heart is softened.

He is a great guy. I have never been able to find out why he stopped believing.

I pray for God to lead you in the right direction to witness to this man.... God knows where he is, and what it is going to take for him to receive the Lord. If he asked you to pray, he isn't an atheist.... he is seeking and he is confused.... Pray for God to help to be a witness.... And to help him open his heart.... it is really all in his hands... He is being responsive if he has asked you to pray...God has opened a door... lead him to the Lord and the Lord will do the rest....... You are surely in my prayers..... I life you up and I lift this friend of your up and the entire family..... God Bless You.....

Jesus taught us not to pray for the dead. It is but once to die and then the judgement. You might tell him that to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD>

That is assuming the one who has passed on was living in Christ while alive. Was this person saved? A christian?

Remind him that Jesus died for him and all of the world and is coming again to take us all home with him and they will be together again if they are in Christ. If she was and he's not this may be incentive for him to get back on track with Christ.

Try leading him through Romans Road..you can google search that it will tell you exactly how to do that too it has a map and all the verses and what to say to him

Good luck!

For me, I stopped believing for awhile because of my church. A new pastor came in, and he started teaching some heretical stuff. I disagreed with him in a conversation, and after that the pastor thought that I had "lost my anointing" and publicly removed me from all the ministries with which I was involved. Painful, humiliating stuff...I blamed God instead of the true source.

I will pray for your friend, that God will reveal His love in a way that he can't deny or explain away. I'll also pray that he realizes that God was not responsible for whatever caused him to leave the faith.

Tell him to become agnostic. As an agnostic, he can believe in possibilities, and though he does not know, perhaps he can find some comfort in not knowing. I used to be an athiest, but realized that while it was a possibility that there is nothing beyond the material universe, there's no proof that there isn't. Perhaps there is a god, perhaps there isn't, and perhaps there is something that is neither god nor matter... but either way, as an Agnostic, neither he nor I would have to pretend we know, and neither of us would have to fear being hypocrites to ask others to pray.

Just say your prayer in silence. He does not need to know it for he might think you wanted to convert him. Give him comforting word about the death of his mother but not with a religious tone. Only when he is ready should you talk about faith. A small dew drop normally cause a ripple a hundred times bigger than its size in a still water.
