You can't spot-reduce - sit ups and crunches will give you tighter stomach muscles but will not burn the fat that is there. Do cardio (walk, jog of bicycle) 5-7 days per week for a minimum of 30-45 minutes per day.
If you can't do that much right away, ease into it - start with 15 min per day and work up from there.
Also watch what you eat - don't over do the sugars and processed carbs (breads, pastas) ... or use whole grain alternatives. Try to eat more small meals per day (5-6) instead of 3 large meals. That will keep your metabolism revved up and keep burning calories when you're not exercising.
Good luck!

I've always heard crunches are only part of it. If you don't burn fat, you don't lose belly fat. The best way to do that is a good diet and aerobic exercise a few days a week.
