Think more specifically about what kind of dog you want. You have already narrowed your search down by quie a lot by saying you want a smaller breed. Other factors to consider would be the climate where you live (short haired breeds dont do well in snow), if you live alone (some breeds are more family oriented, whereas others do better with a single owner), how much grooming you want to do (poodles and yorkies require a great deal of time to groom, the effort of learning to groom them, and/or the money you would pay to have someone else groom them), where you live (large dogs require space, small dogs don't need as much), and what sort of personality you are looking for (some breeds are bred to work, others are bred for companionship).
I suggest reading the American Kennel Club (AKC) website. It will give you a good basic overview of many breeds. Also, find out if there is a dog training club, or kennnel club in your area. These are full of people with a wealth of knowledge, many of whom are willing to tell you about their breed. See if you can attend a dog show. Talk to people, and watch. Trust me, you'll learn a LOT. Dog shows, dog clubs, and the AKC website are good places to find breeders. Look for a reputable breeder. Most of the time they will be more concerned about finding about you than you will be about getting a dog from them. Finally, don't rule out the possibility of getting a dog from your local animal shelter. These dogs all need loving homes, whether or not they are purebreds. Just be aware, that some of these dogs come with emotional baggage, and or behaviour problems and may require some adjustment on their owners part (as well as the dog's).
I have Boston Terriers. They are small dogs, with short fur and pointy ears. The advantage of this is they wash and dry easily, don't require much grooming, and they don't get ear infections. They are extremely smart, and loyal to their people. They also insist on sleeping in bed. :-D
I'm sorry this was so long, but good luck in your search!

Beagles are awesome! They are medium sized dogs. They are very cute, but can be nutty.
You should adopt a dog from the Humane Society or the APA, whatever you decide on. Also mutts are the best, and can have less problems than pure breds, which can have medical problems due to the type of breed.
Also, I don't Yorkies have the "gay stigma", but Poodles do, but I think just Toy Poodles. However, I hate Poodles because my grandparents have a poodle and he was the most evil and cantankerous dog ever! He hated me and my sister. He lived to be 19 or 20.

Yorkie and Poodles are OK, but annoying + gay, now if you are gay that's a good choice I guess. Although I would get something small but smart, cooler and less annoying like a Pug, Boston Terrier, Miniature greyhounds are small and very elegant looking, Jack Russels are extremely smart.

It's great you want a dog.. but think first. do you live in a house or an apt.? Do you have yard for it to play in? Are you going to be able to give it lots of attention? Walks & training. Vet bills are high.
If you do decide to take the next step. Please, Don't by from a pet store, as most of the puppies come from pet mills. If you go for a pure breed they cost more. If buying a puppy the best place to buy is always directly from a reputable breeder. Dog breeders may be located through dog clubs or advertisements for dogs for sale. Or at the Vets, they usually have a listing posted.
I had a pomeranian, for years. they need lots of care, as in combing or brushing their coat. Miniature schnauzer are adorable, but need to be clipped often.
I have a shephard/cheaspeak cross, now.. which is perfect as I live on 15 acres. he is 12yrs. old and weighs 125 lbs..
chose wisely & enjoy!

female golden retriever, they get 50-60 lbs (males 75-100lbs), you don't want a dog that you have to bend over to pet, if that's the case get a cat. also are you lazy, active ? do want the dog as a fashion accessory ? if that's the case you'll get sick of the dog too. also do you live in warm or cold climates ? don't forget you have to take the dog on walks. my golden is happy in 36degrees and snow. the yorkie down the street isn't. If you have time go to a dog show. good luck..don't mean to sound like an ******.

Best thing to do is go to the akc website and research the breeds. Small dogs are yappy usually. Poodles don't shed so that's a plus, but you need to find out what dog is best suited to you and your lifestyle.

you need to read up on the breeds the more intelligent breeds will require more work and more mental stimulation or they will be destructive.. these include the terriers and poodles
the less intelligent dogs are better suited to homes where you dont plan on walking daily and may not be home as often .. Shih Tzu is the best example
whatever you do NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store

a yorkie is a good dog, a lab, a pug, ect. Go to the pound and look at what they have. The dog has to like you like you like them.
Happy dog hunting
