Every recruiter I've ever met has information on both diet and exercise programs for precisely this purpose. Some of them are pretty harsh. One thing to be careful of in dieting is that you can't just go anorectic like a supermodel, you have to keep up energy and lean body mass - that means watching protein, vitamins, etc. Exercise has a far greater effect in getting and staying thin (well, thinner) so that should be the primary focus. Good luck!

I'm sure he knows it, but if he doesn't work the lard off his @ss, he's gonna be in a world of hurt. The Army has changed some requirements and he would be able to get in at about 210, but overweight men must measure below 30 percent body fat, and be able to run 2 miles in 15 minutes, 54 seconds. He also must be able to bang out 53 sit ups and 42 push ups in 2 minutes each.
But if he's not disciplined enough to lose 30 pounds in ONE YEAR, then I'd have to question his dedication and whether the service is right for him.
If he truly wants to lose the weight, lose the carbs and limit red meat to once a week. Italian food? Forget about it. Eat FRESH fruit and vegetables and NO sugary food or drinks, refined or FAST food! Drink Skim Milk & water!
Vary the work outs to include more than running, do shadow boxing, calisthenics, swimming, biking and weight training. If he wants it bad enough, he'll have to sacrifice. He may as well start now and get used to the idea, otherwise he's only kidding himself.

Go to the library or the bookstore and get the Atkins Diet book and follow it! I lost 65 pounds doing the Atkins Diet. You can eat and still stay full with this diet. I lost 45 pounds in the first 4 months and the remainder over the next 7 to 9 months. As with any diet you must stay with it and not break training or no diet will work for you.

GOOD (pinto beans, whole grains, etc) carbs in the morning. Meat and veggies in the afternoon. Veggies and minimal or light meats (fish, chicken) for the evening meal. The more veggies the better and fruits are great. 5 smaller meals instead of 3 large is better to keep hunger down and shrink his stomach pouch so he'll feel full faster. Reduce salt -sub. w/ a splash of vinegar and spicy ingredients. Oh ya...they don't let you have salt in boot camp...at all. Brisk walk loses more fat than slow walk and even jogging...easier on joints too. Eat till you're not hungry anymore. Don't eat till you're full.

Eating is not what he needs. Exercise. Get on your feet and run at 5:00 am exercise. Drop down and give me 50 exercise. Sit ups, Pull ups, leg lifts. Weights. He better get on it. he better move. Yeah that is what he needs for real exercise.

get rid of his italian diet, if he really want to be in the military he needs to discipline himself in eating the right food.
