Because of the inntolerance we show for any one with different beliefs than ours.

After all, that is basically what happened to Jesus. He dared to contradict the "educated" people of the time. He lived His life differently and they couldn't handle that either.

I am a Christian and I have never heard of the cheering thing before. I can offer this observation. We now know why Jesus went to the cross and what it did and secured for mankind. A Christian might cheer because he/she is glad, thankful, praising God for what Jesus Crucifixion accomplished. At the time of Jesus death, most people did not know or fully understand what was being accomplished. They felt that their leader, Gods Son, this good man was being unjustly put to death and to an extent, they were right. They saw the person they felt was going to take over the world (at that time) become ruler but now was dieing and the hope, faith, they had was being destroyed. They didn't understand exactly what Jesus had told them would be accomplished. They may have felt that He was going to become ruler of the earth, make everything right at that time and place. We now know it was meant for a later time and for all people that have ever lived. His agony, pain, rejection...no no one wants to see someone have to go through all that. It's what it accomplished that might be cheered for.

Picture this: a poor kid is born in a trailor park, and once he turns 30 he starts get a band of 12 or so guys to follow him across the US while he proclaims that he's the son of God and that beggars need to stop worrying about getting money 'cause he'll turn all their water into wine. Wouldn't we call that a cult and try and throw him in jail?

But then it turns out he WAS the son of God...whoops! We didn't have bad intentions when we condemned him, but how were we to know?

And that is why hindsight is 20/20. And that is why anyone actually claiming to be Jesus reborn today would probably be laughed at. And that is why Jesus in his own times was condemned. And that's why if you were alive in those times you probably would have been right there with the jeering crowd.

Incidentally, as an atheist, I suppose I'm still the jeering crowd...'cause how WOULD we know he was the son of god?

Fyodor Dostoevsky in The Brothers Karamazov tells the story of the Grand Inquisitor. Jesus appears at a trial presided by the head of the Spanish Inquisition. The Inquisitor knows who he is, but he is compelled to kill him as a heretic.

If Jesus appeared today and declared doctrines contrary to what was orthodox, the mobs would be quick to form.

Because in humility we cannot say that we are any better than the Jews of that time. We may have made the same mistake that they did. So many Christians today do not understand the bible. What are the chances that we would have understood the prophecies if we had lived back then?

Because today's Christians are just the new Hebrews as represented in Revelations, making most of the same mistakes as the old ones.

Possibly because the crucifiction is so critical to their beliefs. They would have cheered it because it was the absolution of all their sins and their key into heaven.

At least that's this hellbound lunatic's thought on it...

Probably for the same reason Jews did 2,000 or so years ago... because it's human nature to despise people when they claim to be something greater than them (whether it's true or not).

But there's always the possibility that those who made that statement are wrong.

Because the Jews did when it actually happened. They didn't understand what was going on and thought Jesus was going to be an earthly King. But he was sent into this world, to allow everyone to come into his heavenly kingdom, if you accept his free gift of salvation

If they mean it in a good way then it's because our redemption from the penalty of our sins was finally accomplished and we can now come before God with confidence that we are no longer under condemnation.
