Odlanyer gave an incredible answer! I will only add a few of my own subjective opinion. Eventhough I am Filipino, I am surrounded by Chinese people everyday as my wife is Chinese and also her family. I have noticed that Chinese people tend to be taller in nature, more athletic, and have a very light skinned tone. My wife's family are scattered all over China. Her relatives from the north tend to be taller while in the South are shorter. They have very light complex skin with almost no tan. Their eyes are more slant and their cheek bones are higher. Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese have some minor similarities for the fact that they are from the North and have similar skin complexion and color. hey are very light. Korea and China are neighbors with only the Yalu River that separates them. Many Koreans have Chinese features but for some odd reason Japanese features as well since Korea is a buffer region in the middle between China and Japan. Japanese have sharper noses than most Asians, they are shorter, and thinner. Southeast Asians like Filipinos, Indonesians, and Malaysians are darker in nature because they live in the tropics wheareas, China, Japan or Korea are colder countries which they experience heavy snow during winter seasons. Filipinos, Indonesians, and Malaysians are of Austro-Polynesian descent. They are actually not Oriental by culture or even by a more comlex DNA gene pool unlke the East Asians. Vietnamese and Thai are somewhat like the Chinese but darker as far as the looks. Vietnamese are a little lighter than Thais. There are almost no genetic resemblance of Thai and Filipinos but people of they say they look simlar.
