This is part of evolution. It's the same as us having ear lobes. They actually improve hearing by helping to focus the sound into the ear. It's the same for cats. They are close relatives of the snake and I presume that this is a remnant of their evolution from snakes. They hiss for exactly the same reason!

Well the notch on my cats ear is called a rip from when a stray cat came in our yard and he ended up scraping with it.

My cat's got that too, and i see it in all cats that come into our clinic. I shall ask around tomorrow and see what people say cause I don't know myself.
