I can type in Chinese, using my english keyboard. I have downloaded from Microsoft an IME that allows me to input chinese romanization (pinying, what they use in China) and it gives me choices of the character that I want. I know that there are IME's for Japanese, Korean, Thai, Chinese (both simplified and Tradtional) among others. In Taiwan, they may use this (but not as much), use Phonetic symbols or enter in radicals. Their keyboards have both english letters and symbols on it, so they could type both. all of these computers have a language bar that allows you to go from English to other languages. Depending on the language slected, it changes what comes up when any given key is pressed.

In Japan, the keybord is almost identical to an American keyboard (except some of the punctuation is in different places and in addition to the roman letters, each key has one hiragana character on it). You type just like you would on an American keyboard, for example, if you wanted to type ä»æ¥ (today), you would type the keys "kyou" and it would appear on the screen like this (ããã) with a dotted line under it, and from there you can either choose to leave it phonetic or you can look through the list of kanji that appears with that same pronunciation until you find the correct one.

there are many ways to type chinese. you can have a handwriting board for those convenient in writing, or there's what you called big 5, or write the strokes or poke numbers. people need great memorizations for this......for me, I use pinyin to get the word out..
