The Year 2000 problem, nicknamed "Y2K," refers to a past
computer industry practice of writing years with just two digits
-- 1999 would be "99." Because of this digital shorthand, on
Jan. 1, 2000, some computer systems, software, and certain
devices with microchips might treat "00" as "1900" and shut down or malfunction.
Answering machine is not a logical device and doesn't want to compare any situations. It will just displays the messages. Answering machine is not a date dependent machine and it will not stop due to mismatch in the date entered. Your machine will be affected with some other problems.

Most likely it's just dead. Y2K was only going to affect devices that
a> used a programmed date with a 2 digit code
b> used that date for more than just display (usually, by comparing to a static date. Like, "Only let X happen after 1998")
Simple devices like televisions and answering machines would only display the date incorrectly, they wouldn't stop working simply because of the date rollback.

The only symptom that's a sure thing is a calendar with "2000" on it. Yours is running six years too slow.
