My harddisk is very unstable and I am planning to transfer everything to another new harddisk. How do I transfer everything including the system files for the new harddisk to boot up ? Can I use Windows XP Home edition to do so ?

Norton Ghost is the best utility to do this. Just be sure to read through the docs completely before making your image.

Its kinda pointless to back up a faulty drive. Your best bet would be to burn all valuable files to a cd. I have tried all methods and the one I find best is to dual boot with two hard drives. Go thru reinstalling windows and put your files back in. Purchase a slave drive and ghost the primary to the secondary. I ALWAYS store my important files to my documents no matter what they are! It is easier to copy them. Burn your my docs folder to a cd every so often. If you have a drive failure just ghost the slave back to the primary. No need to install software or drivers!

I have all my work backed up on flashdrives. When I got my new PC, just had to install the programs, then I copied all the folders/files over.

Norton Ghost would be the ideal choice as this is what it was designed to do.
