What have you thought of???? Anything that involves the other senses or an over-dose of hearing will be great for the child. Touch tanks at an aquarium, an airport, petting zoos, trip to a fabric store for exploration of textures, cheese stores, out door places, and farms to explores smells, touches, and sounds. Is the child hearing impaired on the high end or the low end? If the child hears the high end....visit dolphins. If the child hears the low end...visit the elephants.

Please visit hearing impairment sites on the internet because I have absolutly no experience with blindness or hearing impairment and yet I can think of things that would be good. You live with these impairments daily and you are lost???? Thank God Helen Keller found a real teacher!

You want to give her every opportunity for exploring her surroundings. When I worked in a school for blind preschoolers I spent a lot of money in a hardware store looking for all kinds of different textures that they could explore.

If she has some residual vision, try soap bubbles. I don't know why but the kids could always see those if they had any vision at all.

Feel free to email me if you'd like me to come up with a few more ideas; this was just off the top of my head.

Sculpting with clay.
Have her paint with a thick paint on a good canvas so that the paint has texture (like a Van Gogh). When it dries, have her feel the painting that she has created.
Knitting or crocheting.
Describe colors based on feelings (like in the movie "Mask" - with Cher, not "The Mask" with Jim Carrey)
Baking - she can find the right measuring cup by feel, and the ingredients by taste or smell
Hope some of this helps. God bless you both.

ohh I think I've got a good one - a puzzle.
(and here I thought i'd have no good answer for that.)

and how about one of those 3-D wooden puzzles?

How about a set of a not-so-sharp little saw and some balsa wood? Let them build something of their own.

Get some puffy paint and let them paint their own t-shirts.
