Try going to your public library instead of the bookstore. We go and check out tons of books. Then I can see which ones they really love and I buy their favorites for Christmas, birthdays, rewards, etc. The librarians might have good suggestions for you as well.
A lot of folks mentioned Sandra Boynton. We *LOVE* Boynton, but you may find that she is geared towards a little younger child.

Anything by Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, Tod Parr are great books. I just got a personalized book last week for my 3 yo daughter and she LOVES it. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is fabulous as is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Love You Forever by Robert N. Munsch and Sheila McGraw is a huge favorite here. (my daughter actually reads it to me) There are so many great books out there.

There are some terrific children's books available. The Sandra Boynton books are wonderful. My children love them. I also like Bear Snores On and the two books that followed it. My advice would be to look up books on Amazon and follow the customer reviews. I've spent hours on that site and have found some incredible books by reading through the reviews. We have a giant collection of children's books.

My kids, 2,3 and 6 love Dr. Seuss books. My daughter loved this one book, it was called The new red bed, or The red bed. Can't remember what it was called.. Brain freeze.. Lol.. But if you go to the library and use their computers, that should help you. Try books with short sentences so your child will remember how the story goes, and she'll read with you. Then she'll start recognizing the words and see them in other places and know what they are. That teaches them to read. Good luck and enjoy reading with your daughter.

I got most of my books at yard sales, but I recommend ones like Dr. Suess, Franklin, Bearstein Bears, Winnie the Pooh serious, Disney books, Little Golden Books, sesame street books, curious george, and other mix match ones that I have. You can try to get some of these collections off of ebay too.

I strongly recommend you try brighter vision learning adventures. I started both my children out on this book club. It was developed by early child educators. They send you a hard back book, work book, fun activity , and stickers with every kit, some kits also include music. They send material age appropriate. And each shipment is under $20. I started both of my children out on this program. They absolutely fell in love with reading. My daughter was reading to her classmates in first grade stories at the 3rd grade level. My son was reading in kinder garden. It’s an excellent source for children. The best is you get many things for the kids for less than a book would cost at Wal - Mart Visit http://www.brightervision.com/

Go to the City Library. Picture books are wonderful. The child has the opportunity to talk about the pictures and share ideas about the pictures. Unless, she has a mature attention span, she won't enjoy books with lots of words.

My daughter is 3, going to be 4 in a few months. For the past year we have read more short stories type books. Like DW/Arthur books. They usually have some purpose. Like picky eating/messy rooms...etc. And my daughter is asking a lot of questions. She is starting preschool next month--so our current books are mostly about that situation. She loves "I love you all day long" and "DW's guide to Preschool". For bedtime, we always read to my two yr old and her--the Piggies book as our final book. Finger motions....it's not too babyish---and great for bedtime.
