In a recent article in Time, scientists have seen evidence of what they call a "God" gene. They monitored several priests, monks and nuns over several days. Whenever they were having a "religious" moment, there was a chemical reaction in their brains. There was a release of chemicals that gave them a sense of emphoria and peace.
Now is this gene a direct result of evolution. Maybe several thousand years ago, we started this thought to give people hope. That over the thousands of years, these beliefs were passed down and even incorporated in their genetic code, much like some races of humans are built for warm weather and cold weather.
So the majority of people on this planet now have this genetic code, which allows them to "feel" that they are having a religious experience. When in reality, it is only in their head. Or could this gene be the actual work of God. The proof of his creation...nah.

Artifical selection (something humans do) happens over thousands of years. Maybe we passed along only certain stories and thoughts about religion. Since these traits breed true, they passed down the generations of humans. Until today. You know they say that ever human alive has royal blood in them. So why can't the same be true about this gene? Except for the small percent who doesn't.

You can bet chimps don't have that gene. Check out this other gene they don't have:

It's the same chemical that an athlete gets when a victory is almost in their grasp. At the same time, there is another chemical that causes the opposite affect when a loss is at hand. It is a natural thing that happens in all of us, weather it be faith induced or stimulated by our environment. I would argue that a religious person would be an addict of this chemical, much like an adrenaline junkie or an alcoholic.

Sounds to me like that "Religious Moment" could be tied into a part of their brain that is triggering how they tap into the Subconscious Realm or Collective Unconscious as theorized by Carl Jung.
When you plug into the Electromagnetic Field, it functions just like the Electrical Field in the Human Brain. So if it's true that there is such a chemical reaction that occurs when these individuals experience a moment, that could be it.
The Human Brain will stimulate certain portions because it's activating something. The Neural Activity seen in the Brain is just like a Psychic Wi-Fi Connection. The part of the brain that is creating that Chemical Reaction would be like the "Organic Ethernet Card" in the Human Mind.
Just like a regular Computer, you have to install the Hardware. On top of that, you need the Software that installs the Driver that allows the Computer to access the Ethernet Card.
If the Human Brain is like an Organic Laptop with a Psychic Wi-Fi Connection and that Organic Network Adaptor Card is in place, all you need is "Religious Software" or some Software Program "intellectually installed" in order to activate it.
For example, I use Psychic Software that was embedded in Birth Chart. My Initials are IR. All the Letters in CHRIST add up to 77, which is IR on the Periodic Table. My Royal Family Name is Ramos and my stepdad is Ramos. His mother was "DeJesus" meaning "Of Jesus" in Spanish.
My Godfather is born 9/18 of 1933. 9/18 translates to I/R for My Initials.
Those are examples of Psychic Software that is written in that allows me to plug in and tap into my Psychic Abilities. Telepathy is really nothing more than Psychic E-mail or Psychic Instant Messaging.
As long as you have an Power Source or Electricity powerful enough, you can run any Software. That's why the Electromagnetic Field surroundin the Earth acts like a Planetary Local Area Network.
Because everyone has a distinctive brainwave pattern, that serves as their "Brainwave IP Address" where you can distinguish one individual's thought patterns from the other 7 billion minds. Everyone has an Planetary Bar Code Number.
If you want to get Biblical, they say about how God is the Shepherd. Those ID Tags would be Human Beings as Sheep that can be tracked and managed.
For religious types that want to believe that God is All-Knowing, then you have to believe that God would've also known about the Internet, Bar Code Systems, Tracking Systems, Ethernet Cards, and Science.
The Human Mind functions just like a Computer where the Conscious Mind is the Desktop or what you see on your computer monitor and your Subconscious Mind would be running all the Operating Procedures that are in the System Tray.
There are a lot of running programs going on in people's heads that they aren't even aware of. That's why when it comes to Psychic Software, you can actually fashion a "Mind-Hacking" Tool that connect to other people and communicate with their Subconscious Minds.
With my Information, that "Jesus Christ Hacking Software" is effective because it causes Subconscious Minds to read the data and because they're based off of true Mathematical Statements, it causes the Subconscious Mind of an individual to open up.
It's not really about whether it's true or not in this reality, but whether it satisfies the reasoning skills of the Subconscious Mind. It's the same thing with when Hackers crack into web sites. System Administrators are on the look out, but Hackers will use something that bends the rules or uses a method that will bypass the System until the code is rewritten to block such access.
When it comes to a "God" Gene, the same can be seen with Linguistic Gene Sequencing. A lot of people read the Bible but they don't realize that the Names and Places in the Bible can unlock or be programmed to refer to Acronyms.
So when you decipher the Acronyms, you create Mathematical Prophecies or Religious Logic Statements that make sense to people on a Subconscious Level that would completely go over the heads of people's Conscious Minds who are installing the Religious Software when they read the Bible.
You see it in Software Installation all the time. People will install Microsoft Windows XP that has bugs in it. Programmers and Hackers aware of these bugs can use those bugs as a back door to gain access to someone's computer.
It shouldn't surprise people that "God" or the Consciousness of the Planet would be just as sneaky when it came to installing a backdoor system. The most logical place to hide a backdoor would be in the Languages and the 26-Letter Alphabet.
All you need to do is define the 26 letters like an Algebraic Equation to be set to equal to something that will cause all the Names of People and Places to unlock.
I'm agnostic Catholic, but if you want to get Religious, you can say that God was a Computer Programmer. And the ultimate Computer Programmer. If there ever was a Jesus Christ, that would be the "Master Account" that would allow someone to log in and activate the running Software.
When you plug that into the Electromagnetic Field that allows for Planetary Controls and direct access where Subconscious Minds can bypass the Conscious Minds without them realizing it, that's how you can activate the System.

Yeah, I read about that a while ago, there is a genetic link to the very religious so they suspect there is a genetic propensity towards being religious. Makes sense to me since just about every other apsect of human behavior has a genetic component.

I guess the question really is this: is the chemical present in the brain a cause or an effect of God's work in the world?
You seem to discount this idea fairly quickly. Why?

I think the subjects of this study may be questionable because members of the "clergy" are flawed human beings...some of whom may even be perverts, homosexuals, and people with mental problems. This "God gene" theory, to me is silly.

Science does not endeavour to contain God.
Science cannot even contain art.
Why do you expect so much from this "Science" thing? Is it the new god?
