I just gave my son a mohawk yesterday. First, you'll need to decide the width and length of the hair you want to keep. When considering the length, ask yourself whether you'll wear it relaxed or stiff like a rooster? If you choose the rooster look, then remember that activities, like riding in a car with your head against the headrest, will flatten your spike. My son chose to keep his on top and just an inch or so down the back. That way, most of his back is shaved, leaving him the freedom to lie on his back without messing up his "do". Remember that if you don't cut too much at first, you can always cut more later.

Next, wash or wet your hair. Using a comb, "part" your hair into the shape of your mohawk. Using clips, barrettes, even clothes pins, try to pin together all of the hair you're going to keep. Then, simply cut the rest of your hair. If you have an electric hair razor, then use that. If not, cut the hair that you want to discard with a scissors first and then shave it with a disposable razor.

Now that you've gotten rid of the unwanted hair, how tall do you want it to stand off of your head? Do you want to trim you're mohawk? If so, re-wet it. Comb a small piece of it, closest to your forehead, straight up in the air. Snip it to the desired length. Now comb it up again while adding a little bit of the hair next to it. Cut the newly combed hair to match the already snipped hair. Repeat the process for the rest of your mohawk.
Hope you like it, but if not, remember---It's only hair. It will grow back. And if you don't like it, simply buzz it all off. Good Luck.

Section off the mowhawk (you know where it goes right?) It should be about 3 inches wide. You may have to be patient and section it off a couple of times until it is perfectly center. Use clips to keep the mohawk-y part out of the way of the other stuff you will shave. You can get clips at any drug store. It is much like sectioning off piggy tails (if you have a female friend nearby that would be good) then shave off the rest with no guard followed by a bic razor or something equivalent.
Then, decide how long you want the mowhawk. Take out the clips. Say you want it to be about 2 inches long. Hold up the remaining hair at 2 inches and cut above your fingers. Do this all the way down the back of the head..For instance, pick up the first 2 inches piece you cut and match it to the long piece behind it and cut it the same length (that is called a guide cut). Do this over until you are done! Good luck dude...or dudette I guess.

i hope you're trying to say you want a faux-hawk instead of mohawk. the faux-hawk is a shorter version of a mohawk, instead it doesn't require any shaving on the sides of your hair. i don't know what is so interesting about a mohawk in general, but why would you let your friend do your hair when this person never had any kind of experience with hair? you need to tell your friend to go to the nearest regis hair salon and pick up a magazine to read tips on how to do hair. you definitely need a hairstylist do your hair for you. plus i think mohawks are lame and so bygone era of the 80s. if you want to score big with that special somebody, i would get a fauxhawk. it's way sexier and i think it looks great on any guy.

Bad idea to let a friend do your hair when neither one of you know what you are doing. Go to a salon.
A mohawk requires a straight line about 2" wide down the middle of your head, from forehead to neck. The sides are shaved bald. I wouldn't recommend trying this. You can end up with a crooked cut, and you might just shave it all off just to make it look like something.

I would just go to the barber or stylist. A friend of mine gave me a mohawk recently, and it was a little uneven, so I paid for a stylist to fix it anyways. My mohawk looks much better now.

A barber/stylist will still charge full price just to fix a haircut that somebody else gave you.

shave off everything but a strip in the middle, leaving that as long as you would like.
I suggest going with the faux-hawk, similar, but less extreme, and totally sexy!
