I'm thinking about joining the military, but I wanted to know what is the shortest amount of time that I could be allowed to serve.

you can do a 3 year enlistment just talk to a recruter. My husband has been in 10 yrs i am verry proud of him and you for considering serving your country

all Initial contracts are for EIGHT years. that can be broken up into a combination of Active Duty, Reserves and Inactive Ready Reserve.
National Call to Service has the shortest AD commitement: 15 months once all training(boot/Basic and all schooling) is completrd.

You can sign a 2 yr contract with the Army but after that 2 years you will be considered on "inactive" service which means you are out of the military but if for some reason they needed you they can call you back.

4 years active 4 years not or boot camp followed by remaining 8 as inactive

That is totaly up to you. They will tell you what they want. You need to tell them what you want and stick to it.
In our nations current situation, waivers, are flying all over the place, ask for one and run with it!
