Or do some rules still apply?

Practicing orthodox or conservative Jews will abstain from eating things that are on the list of no- no, such as pork, shrimp, etc. There are Reformed Jews that will eat what they will. It's more of a question of looking at why was the rule made. Did shrimp go bad quickly in those ancient days? Did pork go bad quickly are did it used up too much salt? Good question.

There is no such thing as a "non-kosher" jew. There are jews who don't keep kosher, but that is just their decision. doesn't mean its allowed.

I might add that the "reasons" people propose for why certain foods are unkosher have NO basis in any classical jewish literature, and certainly not in any classical halacha. The bottomline is that something isn't kosher because G-d said not to eat it.

Well, if one is a "non-Kosher" Jew, he/ she can eat anything they want. However, many "non-Kosher" Jews observe Kosher laws during certain Jewish holidays such as Passover.

Yeah, some of my friends are non-Kosher. They eat anything other people eat, as far as I know.

if someone doesn't follow laws, he doesn't follow laws. some jews make alternate sets of laws -- dairy foods without rabbinical supervision...non kosher meat but not pork etc. but those are all just personal rationalizations.

Regular, everyday Jewish can eat anything as long as they are not allergic to it :)

But I do love a good bowl of matzoh ball chicken soup and chopped liver (from waldbaums) on chalah bread. YUM!
