I've gone back to the ER twice and they keep telling me that the recovery process takes time. The pain is so severe that if I continue in a vertical position for too long I become nauseated and flush. I know that there's nothing you can do for a virus, but this is pretty bad. I'm a single parent and need to get back to work. If I don't work I don't get paid. Please advise.

Well first of you have to understand how meningitis affects your body. you are experiencing pain because meningitis is an illness in which there is inflammation of the tissues that cover the brain and SPINAL CORD. everytime you sit up and stand your putting the spinal cord to work and its inflammed, thats why it hurts.

In your case usually the symptoms last from 7 to 10 days and you should recover completely. Bacterial meningitis, on the other hand, can be very serious and result in disability or death if not treated promptly. It is really important for Bed rest ( no more standing up for long periods of time ), drinking lots of fluid and taking some medicine to relieve fever and headache

Make a doctor's appointment. It takes some people 3 to 5 YEARS to recover. You should speak with him/her about applying for temporary disability. Also, it is because your spinal cord is swollen.
