I am interested in training military dogs, but can't seem to find information on the MOS or requirements for the job. I know that MPs work the dogs once they are trained, but that's not what I want to do. I want to train the dogs and the handlers to work together, which is what I understand the Training Squadron at Lackland does for all of the branches.

Does anyone have experience with this unit, and can anyone provide information on what it takes to get into it? I know Lackland is an AFB, but is the Training Squadron Air Force only? I'm looking into joining the Army, so that's where I've looked.

They do not have an MOS just for training the dogs. Its a long process. First you will have to join the Army (any branch will work) and then after 2 years as an MP (MOS 31B) you can put in to become a dog handler (not the easiest slot to get). After you are a dog handler for a while to can put in to become an instructor at Lackland....

Its a long process because they cant have someone that has never handled a dog before train other people on how to do it.

only an idiot would run for a k9 officer. Whenever BF watches cops I tend to yell at the tv "they have a dog dumbass! no point in running!" I swear if I was a criminal, I wouldn't run anyway, but if I heard "dog" I would stop and get on the ground. No way I'd be able to get away from a k9 unit. Pretty dog. GET 'EM! here, I've only seen GSDs for the k9 units. We don't seem to have many because they're usually talking about getting more.

talk with your recruiter or someone from the different services. recruiters this time of the year you'll find them at fairs, fall festivals, colleges and schools...ask them straight out about the MOS or requirements and as to what branches handle the training squadrons. to be all you can be ...you must do what you dream.
