Is there an actually free data recovery software?

I deleted a file by mistake today and a couple of free trials I downloaded find it but dont let me recover it unless I buy the software. It is too expensive for me right now, but I dont want to lose my file

if you have a Windows 2000 or later OS
it has system restore built in
some computers have a system recovery as well
restore = make it like it was a few days ago
recovery = make it like it was when you FIRST got it
(it = PC)
