The detective is most commonly the person who takes an investigation to the 'next step' of more intense, time consuming, inquiry.

For example in a police department an officer is a first responder to a crime scene and does all the preliminary investigation, interviews, evidence collection, etc. The detective often takes responsiblility from that point on, which may last weeks or months or more.

That's a general description. There are exceptions.
