You are suppose to. But I don't know anyone who does.

To test-lighten your hair, use instructions that come inside box. You usually take a snip of hair from the back of your neck, an inch or two, then tape the strand together. Apply a small amount of the hair color mixture (the box instructions will tell you how to do this) onto the strand of hair. Let hair color develop for amount of time recommended (usually 20 - 30 minutes). The color you see will be about the same color you can expect when you color your whole head.
You can't make hair lighter than the color of the test results with one application. It is not recommended to put repeated applications of hair color onto hair. Wait at least a month before reapplying hair color even then, if you want to go much lighter, dark hair may need to be ultra-lightened. This amount of lightening is not possible with most hair coloring. There are special formulas to lighten very dark hair, but it's usually best left to a professional hairstylist.

Try Scruples from the beauty supply store it is designed without bleach & you can start with a small amount of hair to add a streak here & there. Or try a Fantastic Sams in your area, they are affordable & very much worth the trip! I hope this helps.

Use a pre-lightener and then colour it.

The pre-ligghterner removes all the colour (you might have to prelighten twice if your hair is dark)

Then use a colour... if you want to be blonde then ask for a blonde colourant.

do not mix bleach into it... that is very dangerous if it gets in your eyes. (hair dye is specially formualted so as not to blind you, household bleach is not)

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEONE ELSE SCRUBBING THE STUFF IN
