Honda Civic is pretty good. Look into the Toyota Yaris or a diesel VW Jetta. Both are about 50 mpg.
Don't know much else about either.
I think you should stick with the Civic, though. You're going to lose money if you trade in yours anyway.

I have driven a Toyota Prius (hybrid electric) for 4 years. I absolutely love it! The only problem was with the power steering. Toyota was aware of it long before I was. They fixed it free of charge. There have been no problems since. I got between 40 and 44 mpg regularly when I drove 25 miles one way. It doesn't do quite as well now that I only drive 4.5 miles.
As a Honda owner, you may also want to consider the Honda Insight (2-seater 5-speed that gets up to 70 mpg) or the new Honda Civic hybrid.

If your Civic is in good shape, I'd say keep it and wait a while longer for the high-mileage hybrids to come down in price. Civics are already pretty good with the MPGs themselves. And just follow the standard tips for getting better mileage (take out unnecessary weight from the car, keep the tires properly inflated, run the AC sparingly, etc.)
But if you really want a new car, I hear good things about the Yaris and of course the Hybrids.
Also, would they consider letting you telecommute at least once a week? Or is there a commuter vanpool or something?
Good luck to you.

You seemed to be focused on fuel mileage only, there are other considerations about as important. Vehicle cost, maintenance, insurance, reliability, depreciation, etc. I can't imagine anything much more economical than the civic you are now driving. Like you I commuted 70-80 miles per day. I started in 1982,bought a datsun pickup truck -used- drove it until the day I retired ,512,000 miles. Probably the cheapest commute of all.

I agree wtih several answers:
1. Move closer to your work.
2. Figure out a way to car pool.
3. Keep the car you have if it runs well. The Civic is a good commuter car.
Other than that, a VW diesel will get excellent fuel mileage, nearly 50 mpg on the highway. VWs have nice, comfortable interiors and a sporty feel, although they are typically not as reliable as a Honda.

I have a 97 saturn 4dr. I drive 50 miles round trip to work everyday. It get 30-32 mpg and has been a great vehicle. It has 90,000 miles and I've owned it for 2 yrs. For new cars i recomend a toyota or honda because of reliability. Toyata has the new Yaris excellent milage, room for a little car an price its hard to beat. Don't spend money on hybrids when a cheaper car will get you almost as good milage.. good luck

A Honda Civic is one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in the market, but maybe you should consider a Honda Civic Hybrid.

It rather relies upon on the place youpersistent: --Hybrids use breaking to regenerate their batteries. for this reason, the extra stop and bypass site visitors you're in, the extra effectual they are. of path, vehicle manufacturers are extra advantageous than satisfied to cost you an significant top type for such performance. --on the different hand, if youpersistent specially on the line, i'd seem for a superb 4 cylinder sedan--a Honda Accord can get you 35mpg (as much as 40mpg with a Toyota Corolla while you're prepared to offer up some convenience) jointly as lacking the barriers of the puny engines of the Prius or perception. --in case you may get hold of a sparkling turbodiesel (like those provided around the pond), those are, dollar for dollar, the main relaxing topersistent and effectual autos around. If I keep in mind good, an Audi A6 TDI can get between 40 5 and 50 mpg highway. additionally, each and every of the recent ecu diesels can run on 20% biodiesel mixture (biodiesel does not comprise sulfur and is for this reason 'greener' than time-honored fossil fuels).

Dang! Get a job closer to home. Carpool! Dang!
I drove a GEO Metro for several years, and it sipped gas like a true lady. Any compact car should get good mileage. Hybrid's don't do as well on the highway, so I would get the new Honda Fit compact. Also, the Toyota Echo is an excellent choice.

The civic has some of the best milage out there. You're driving the best on the road with the exception of the Smart car. It still not allowed in the US though. Sold everywhere else though. 100 miles on one gallon of gas.
