Try not to expect anything! You will be surprised and touched by the people you meet. While there are some chronic homeless, you will find people college educated (post graduate!), people who have just encountered a bad run of luck, and people who CHOOSE to be homeless. They're not all the "bums" most people think they are.
It's eye openeing. Especially after you've spent some time listening to some of them talk and tell you stories, and you realize - it could easily be you. Makes you have a better appreciation for how lucky you really are.

I would be loving but with a little guard up for the cons and my safety. I would treat everyone the same and talk with them, especially the kids and moms.I was told that if you cannot relate to a murderer, molester, etc that you can always relate to them as a human being. I would use that advice because some ppl are in the shelter because of bad choices and not just because of economy.I think I could handle it well because I love to help and to give. The only problem I would have would be odors and I would just have to deal with it.

i had to volunteer at a homeless shelter with one of my classes at school. i didnt know what to expect and was quite nervous to be honest. my teacher told us to remember not to be judgemental, that many of the people there have many great stories to tell and that if you would sit with them and talk to them they would greatly appreciate it. some of the people may be a little rude but definately be patient with them and dont get frusterated. other tan that a lot of them are really nice and all they really want is someone to talk to.
i expected the people there to keep to themself and be super judgemental of us. but i was totally wrong. it was a great experience.
hope you enjoy it as much as i did.

I was surprised by the large percentage of mentally ill. It's sad that we refuse to take better care of these helpless people. They need to be in a group home or something.

defenintly be opened minded about other people...but usually the homeless people will just praise on you for doing such a thing and taking time out of your day
