There are several problems with that. For one, at the same amount it would cost you to fuel and maintain a car for a year, you could probably feed and care for a horse for about six months. Secondly, if you want a horse, you have to have room for a horse, and I know a lot of people in apartments who would not be keen on the idea of sharing it with a horse. And finally, the car was invented to alleviate horse waste, which was making every major city in the world miserable to live in at the turn of the century.

Do you know what it costs to maintain a healthy stock of horses? You need many because you can't run a horse to death all day long OR days in a row.
To be cost effective you need to breed your own horses. The Vet bills aren't cheap.... and then of course their's horse college to send the little ones to... it's just not economical.
Split it down the middle and buy a Pinto or Mustang....

Wouldn't that be nice?
When I had my horse, we rode up town a few times to pay bills.
I had no hitching post to put him by and almost took him inside to pay those bills.
We were quite a pair.
Truth is, medical bills for a horse and yourself, the cost of hay and the fact that these are social creatures needing the company of their own species, makes having one for everyday purpose more expensive that the gasoline and insurance for your car.
Oh but what a ride!
The best you can ever have and something you cherish for a life time.

Rather unlikely! Can you imagine what that would do to our economy?? Think of all the gas stations, mechanics, and truck drivers that would put out of work. Then think of all the changes that would have to be made to regress to the days of horses and buggies. Dirt roads, horse barns, and congestion even worse than we now experience. At least you are thinking of alternatives, but I do not think this one will work.
Chow!!

We could to a certain extent. Bicycles would be even better. Some people live many miles from their jobs and freight trains and trucks would still have to use oil and gas. During the millennium I expect it will be that way, but the bible doesn't say exactly.

I love my horses and I love to ride them; for short periods of time. Have you ever ridden a horse for very long? I sure don't want to have to ride one 30 miles one way to work. Also they can be skittish and some what unreliable in a thunder storm, not to mention the fact that you would be soaked and in danger of being struck by lighting. So let's see, 1500lb animal with it's own mind, scared in a thunderstorm with me on my way to work = me on my *** on the wet ground with no way to work. Let's figure out an alternative fuel to run our cars on okay?

Horses are more expensive, more time consuming, and cost more to feed vet and house than a car ever thought of being. Try putting up hay with someone during the hottest day of the summer and then tell me how bad you want to have horses.(heaving a couple thousand 75 to 100 pound bales of hay on a ninety degree day... good times)

No. travel these days requires speed. Work horses are expensive to feed and maintain. We have other options for fuel, we have just put our eggs in one basked and become too dependent on petroleum products.
