When i work out, whether it is running on the treadmill, spinning or on the elliptical - the sole of my foot hurts a lot, sometimes it tenses up and feels like there is a metal rod going through it. Maybe there are sneakers out there that can help or maybe i am doing something wrong??? Any advice?

1) Check your shoes... are they shot? If you are running, be sure you have running shoes. Cross trainers do not count.

2) You could have plantar fasciitis. You may want to do some research into it. It is usually characterized by foot pain, particularly in the morning when you first wake up. If you have it, see a doctor (podiatrist) and consider getting shoes specific for your feet (i.e. cushioned, motion control, etc).

3) Are your shoes too tight? Perhaps not enough circulation. Those elliptical trainers can be murder on your feet.

If none of these apply, you might consider taking a week off and seeing where you stand after that. Perhaps some aleve or other anti-inflamatory would help. If after all that, see a doctor for more help.

I have you beat I am on my feet, walking at least 10.5 hours a night. I wear running shoes which are just right for that. I really dont know what you do for a living, but if you are to wear business shoes I suggest naturalizers They are about $50-75 expensive, but worth it. Nursing shoes are made for long hours and walking around. My Aunt swears by them.

Sounds almost like sickle cell anemia, although it is not likely to occur in the sole of the foot. My advice is to see a doctor before things get worse. Good luck.
