First, make sure that your peripheral (the "thing u plug in") is powered, either by the USB or by it's own power source.
Second, check to see if your peripheral needs to have it's driver (the program that helps your computer communicate with the device) installed before your device is "plugged" in.
Finally, try hooking another USB device which your computer does recognize, to make sure that your USB port is functioning correctly.
These are the three most likely suspects. Beyond that, there are a variety of malfunctions in the device and your computer which could be causing problems. If the first three solutions do not solve your problem, then you should check the websites for your computer or for the device for troubleshooting tips.

Sometimes the table that stores USB device information gets confused and nothing will run until it is cleared
Go into the control panel
Click on the sytem icon
Click on the hardware tab
Click the Device Manager button
Look down the hardware catagories for the USB devices (near the bottom)
Click on the + in front of the USB catagory, should expand to show all the USB ports on your PC
Right click on each and do an uninstall
Reboot the PC, it will reinstall the port(s) and after that should work

If you have more then just one USB port.
Does any of the other USB ports recognize anything.
If none of the USB ports are recognizing anything, then you need to get in to your BIOS system setup and enable USB support.
How you get into BIOS system is by rebooting your computer, and as soon as the computer reboots, hit the "DEL" key repetitively until the BIOS system setup screen shows up. Please note that some computers use the "F1" or "F2" key.
When you get into the BIOS setup. Look under the Integrated Preth??? and you should see USB setting.
If one USB port recognizes things but the other USB port doesn't then that port that doesn't recognize anything could possible be bad.
What operating system you have has no effect on how the USB picks up on any attached or plugged in devices.
All USB devices are controlled and configured by the BIOS system.
The BIOS system talks to the Operating System and tells it what's going on in the system.
You Dig it?
Microsoft Windows makes people stupid, because when they believe that everything they use on their computer is controlled by the Operating System, they don't see the big picture or see what's behind it all.

Have you updated any software recently? That may be the problem. Camera software especially. Go to the Start menu, Control Panel, System. Click on Device Manager and scroll to USB devices. If there is more than 1, try the second one. If that doesn't work and there is a 3rd USB device try that. Plug in your USB item each time first, to see which one turns it on.

Have you installed the drivers for whatever you are trying to plug in? I know it sounds daft but most devices have to have the software installed BEFORE you plug them in. You can seriously damage your PC if you do not stick to this rule. Try unplugging your device, re-starting your PC and then installing the device software and drivers before you plug anything in.
If this doesn't work then I'd take a look in Device Manager and see if the necessary drivers are installing properly or if there are any device conflicts.
If you have installed any software or hardware recently then try un-installing it and re-booting your PC.
If you have moved the base unit recently then this, too could have caused a faulty port connection. This would require an engineer to replace the port, which is a relatively small and inexpensive job.

It happens from time to time. The connections may be loose or you may need to take it into the suppliers recommended dealer.
It may also be that the drivers need re-installing. I assume you have thought of that though.
Anyway, try this. It sounds very low-tech but 'flatten' the usb plug in just a little bit with pliers. I stress; just a little. The connection should be tighter and mave around less.

maybe you are not using the newest operating system. if you are still using windows 98 then you need disk drive everytime you want to connect your usb.
If you are using windows XP then it'll auto detect, but if it's still undetected then restart ur computer or refresh your desktop
