I've been told that even Diet Soda can hinder your weight loss efforts. The sweet taste triggers the insulin in your body to have a similar reaction to what it would have if you were drinking regular soda. Therefore, diet soda can give you cravings for other sugary drinks and food.

They say if you must have a soda, drink the no calorie kind, and also no caffiene if you can help it. But if you drink water, and enough of it every day, it has some great benefits that are blocked by a soda....the biggest one being, sodas are diuretics...you will actually become dehydrated the more you drink them, which is why you continue to crave them after you drink them. Water satiates you, fills you between meals, and keeps your system flushed and balanced.

Your body also retains water when it's not getting enough, kind of like a backup...that's why, when you first start a diet and start chugging the water, you will continally be going to the bathroom for a couple of weeks (it feels like you're overflowing the system), but then it gradually slows back down (your body knows it's getting the right hydration).

Three more biggies: don't skip breakfast, eat a salad-based meal for either your lunch or dinner, and exercise for about 20-30 minutes a day, and you'll have no problem meeting your dietary goals.

While these drinks are marketed to those who are weight conscious, no published study has shown that drinking diet soda will cause a person to lose weight. Changing the food energy intake from one food will not necessarily change a person's overall food energy intake, or cause a person to lose weight. One study [1], at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, reported by Sharon Fowler at the ADA annual meeting, actually suggested the opposite, where consumption of diet soda was correlated with weight gain. While Fowler did suggest that the undelivered expected calories from diet soda may stimulate the appetite, the correlation does not prove that consumption of diet soda caused the weight gain. The weight gain may have caused the consumption of diet soda. The ADA has yet to issue an updated policy concerning diet soda, and may face a conflict of interest in doing so, as they are now in partnership with candy and soda companies [2].

Actually diet sodas are not good at all. A study a few years ago found that people who switched to diet soda gained MORE weight than those who drank sugar-sweetened soda. Something about the body being fooled by the sweet taste into slowing your metabolism. Try flavored (but completely unsweetened) seltzer if you really need a bubbly drink.

While diet sodas may contain no calories, they do contain an ingredient called aspartame (which according to the Atkins Diet), makes it difficult for you to lose weight. I don't exactly remember what it is about that ingredient that keeps you from losing wt., you might want to look into that a bit.

Diet sodas have alot of salt, which causes you to retain water. It's better to drink water, and low-calorie fruit drinks.

There have been studies that actually show that if you drink diet sodas it makes you crave sugar more so you end up eating more than you would if you just drank water.
