I understand that the manager can enter the apt. for emergencies, but what about to just inspect the smoke detector. Even if I was not home he could come back when I am there and check the smoke detector.

He has to give you notice.
What's more, you have the option of denying him entry if you wish. However, this could always sour relations.
If he just entered without permisssion, no.

Your apartment complex should NEVER enter your apartment without informing you first. Even to check a smoke detector. They should either call or send you a form letter. You can check the landlord/tenant laws in your state but I'm sure this is a fact...

Yes, management/maintenance has the right to enter your apartment but they have to leave you notice stating they were there and why they were there. What stikes me funny about your question is it is usually maintenance that would be checking smoke detectors, not the manager.

they can, but in most states it's the law that they have to give a 24 hour notice that they will be entering the premises. At least in california, it's 24 hours. Not sure where you are located. But obviously it wouldn't be right for someone to be able to just walk into your unit at any given time, so I imagine wherever you are located, you have a similar law.

Check your lease. Typically, it does state that if entering for a valid reason of business for the property, they can enter. But it is proper for them to notify you 24 hours in advance.

If you wish them not to, then let the landlord know that you do not want them in without your presence. In the future, when signing the lease, you can mandate that, and cross it off the lease before signing it.

Most of the time, he can for routine maintenance and related matters. Sometimes, he has contract personnel on site and can't wait for you to be there while they enter. There is probably something in your lease that specifies what he can and cannot do. I wouldn't worry about it. He may have entered before to check the batteries.

Yes, they have right to enter under maintenance clauses, but call the landlord and tenant act regarding your concerns.

Yes most do, most post some general note someone on the appartment bulliten board saying it they will be done during a certain time preiod.

Your lease probably says he can. I do not agree with it. If you want it to stop.....report something missing like your mothers wedding ring or some cash that was on the dresser. Maybe they forgot to lock the door!
