There is a very good version of the bible called The Quest Study Bible. It is written in the New International Version, which I find easier to understand, it's more modern English. In the margins of the text you are reading are questions and answers that might come to mind as you're reading the scripture. Also, at the front of each book is a description of when the book was written, by whom, what the general "theme" of it is, and who the "audience" of the book was written for.
There is another book called Halley's bible handbook that goes into very great detail about how the books of the bible were put together, who decided which ones went into what is now the modern "bible", etc.
The best test to see if you believe the bible to be inspired by God is to read and study it for yourself. Yes, I believe that the men who wrote the bible were inspired by the holy spirit. But....I can't convince anyone else. Each person has to come to their own decision about that.

Well I don't know their names. But they put together the Christian Bible by starting with the Jewish Torah the base religion. Then started throwing out books that did not agree with their way of thinking or the words did not say what they wanted to teach.
I'm sure they made that claim. But they were not guided by the hand of God. They were guided by the hand and minds of mortal men that were trying to start a supposedly new religion . rather than a addition to one that was already established.

The New Testament was put together by the Council of Nicea in 325AD(?). Some of the rejected stuff was found in Nag Hammadi. Also the Apocrypha (it's a book) includes rejected books. Look also for the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Mary Magdalene. There are a lot of resources for learning about the info that was left out. The final version was put together as is for political reasons.

Well I was raised to believe that the old testament was written by God himself, it was found on cave walls and other areas such as those. And king James had the bible translated into English. And it has been said that when the translators came to a part they themselves couldn't translate King James essentially told them to embellish, and gather what they could from surrounding text that they could deceiver. So i truly believe some of the bible was written incorrectly, simply to fit King James and his own views. I have no proof to actually back this up of course. It is just my own personal belief, because the bible was originally written in a language that most couldn't understand.

For the Pentateuch Imagine a bunch of Rabbi"s and Lawyers. For the new testament imagine the Roman Emperor Constantine. there are an extra five books in the bible called the Apocrypha. There are also related writings in the museums around the world and the Catholic Church retains a huge library of unusable scripture that they can not release because it is obviously insanity or conflicts with the dogma and doctrine.

King James let it be translated in 1611. Most of these answers are so wrong.
Thankfully Kenny and Camille answered. Every thing else if crap. The book of Mary is lost I believe but there is the book of Judas you can read. I know there are other books not in the bible that were not destroyed or lost but I do not recall their names. I see someone further down mentions them.
Anyhow they were men with agendas and apologists usually cite that hey almost always agreed on the choices to justify what was left out.

Look up the Council of Nicea. They were a council made up of cardinals that came together to decide which books to include in the bible. Some of the unused books of the bible are called the "Gnostic Gospels". They include books from Mary Magdalene and others that were there during the time of Jesus, but whose accounts differed from the books that were put into the bible.

I love your question. It was "actual men" that wrote (and edited) the Bible and not God as Christians believe! The Bible is so antiquated. Did we even know that the world was round yet? We were doing sacrifices for God's sake! Now when I read anything about Quantum Physics or String Theory I see God. Proof that we really are connected to something and each other. I don't imagine God dividing but unifying.

The first bible was assembled in what is now known as Turkey. Commissioned by Emperor Constantine for his churches to be built Constantinople sometime around 325 to 360 A.D. (I don't remember the date) He and Pope Damascus assembled a council to select the books to included in the cannon. Wikipedia has a nice section on this topic including the books that were excluded.

Some suggested books on this are:
1. Misquoting Jesus by Bart Ehrman
2. The Good Book by Peter J. Gomes
3. Lost Christianities: The Battles for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew by Bart D. Ehrman
I'd start with #3 if I were you.
