M & M stands for Forrest Mars Sr. and R. Bruce Murrie--The guys who created M&Ms. They combined their last names together since they couldn't use the name Smarties (there was already a candy under that name)

I know they were used in the military ready meals in world war 2, because they had a shell around the chocolate, so they wouldn't melt...i think it stands for military meal, or something to that effect.
