If you are refering to the Telstar 3 Communications Satellite launched in early 1980, the design life was about 10 years. Take a look at

The original Telstar Geosynchronous communications satellite was launched on the 10th July 1962. I think it's still floating around up there but I seem to repair it being de-commissioned about 15 years ago.
