GI, which stands for Government Issue, then name stuck! Just as in Jeep, which was a name given the vehicle that could seemingly travel "anywhere", as in the cartoon, Popeye's little "dog" (or whatever he was; could walk up, down, and through walls)... that name too stuck, and we have the company called Jeep! The actual vehicle was made by at least four different companies (willey's became Jeep), GM, Ford, and a few others also made the vehicle, according to govt specs.

It is American. GI (pronounced gee eye) actually is G1 (gee one, using the Roman numeral I). GI is a standard normal fighting soldier. G2 is their intelligence section. American soldiers joke that GI stands for 'Government issue". In the same way when you hear the Yanks talk about "Eye Corps" they are discussing 1st Corps (One Corps) .
