I totally agree with Emily E and Huskymom. It is not an enjoyable experience and oral hygiene is very important. Even though I always say that deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is pain free (with local anesthesia) or a little discomfort, I actually think it's really an unpleasant treatment. Whenever my hygienist gives me a cleaning, maybe i don't respond too well to the anesthesia or my gums are too inflamed, I feel some extreme discomfort or pain from treatment. Some say taking Advil or Tylenol would help.

You will experience bleeding, tender gums, but your dentist should numb you before hand, otherwise it would be very painful. Hopefully he will use some ultrasonic equipment before hand to remove some calculus (tartar build up) so it will be a lot quicker, but since he's doing the roots, the unpleasant curettes are inevitable. Most likely he will give you a prescription mouthwash and some gel for your gums.

I agree with EmilyE. I am also a dental assistant. Everyone always tells you the bad experiences, not the good ones. It is not as bad as people make it out to be. But remember, if you don't keep up regular visits and have great homecare, you will be doing this again one day.

i am a dental assistant... its not an enjoyable experience. you will be numb and very tender. if you usually sensitive to pain, you might want to et some pain meds fom your dds. its totally worth it! you are taking the first step to dental health. just remember- this is what you have to do when you don't take good care of your mouth and brush and floss daily!
