If the pets hair is short and lighter check the head and underneath for brown moving bugs.
Or...you can give your dog a bath, the fleas will run to the top of the head.
Or....give the dog Capstar (sp?) pill. Make sure the dog is outside when you give it because the fleas will start coming to the end of the dogs fur within 20-30 minutes.
Follow up with frontline.

If your dog has blackish/brownish dirt on her especially next to her skin then she probably has fleas. If she doesn't currently have fleas then now would be a good time to get Frontline or a flea collar or something similar. If she does have fleas then take her and any other pets to a groomers for a flea dip and use a flea "bomb" inside your home. Fleas are not pleasant in the house and oh yes, the fleas will jump and bite you.

Stand her on some white paper, on a white counter or in the tub. Scratch her back. If small, black specks fall onto the surface, it's flea poop.
Check your house by putting on a pair of clean, white sox and walking around for an hour, especially in carpeted areas. If you have fleas, you'll know it!
To treat the dog and the house, just search for "flea control" on Yahoo!, then read a reputable source, like a University web page.

Get your dog on Frontline. Second, flea combs work pretty well for getting fleas out. Just comb through her fur and then dunk the comb in a cup of soapy warm water. The fleas will drown in there.

Definitely get some frontline-fleas can cause many health problems.
When you groom your pet and see lots of small darks flecks in the fur, that's a sign of fleas(it's the poop). If you're still not sure, rub a wet white cloth or tissue over the fur-if it has pink streaks, that's proof-the feces are dried blood. Good luck.

put some white paper towel under the dog before you brush him... if you have little black dots on the paper towels afterwards that is flea poop... I know that is gross but that is the way to know and yes fleas jump and they will bite you.. I use advantage for all my animals... it kills 98-100% in least than 12 hours.... and its good for almost a month.... plus it has more things it kills than frontline.... good luck... ps check out petmeds.com it has a comparison chart

tummy is the easiest place to look for fleas cuz the fur is less dense there look for little tiny black things that move. also taking your hand and slowly wiping your dogs hair backwards and looking for them works too. yes, if your dog has fleas, they can jump on you, your furniture, your carpets. your home can become infested and then you will have to flea bomb the whole place. best is to keep your pet on a topical flea medicine

You can look for the fleas themselves, they are brown to black and will jump around. You can look for flea droppings which look like dirt and are crispy if you crush it. Flea eggs are white and can resemble dandruff and they aren't always easy to spot. Just because you can't see fleas on her, doesn't mean they aren't there.

Fleas like to hide in warm areas on the body, like their bottoms, around their collar, near their tummies and sumties even near their "special" parts of their body. That's usually how I find fleas on my dog.
