Go see a medical doctor and have this checked out. There are about a million things that could cause sharp pains in your back. It could just be muscle tension or it could be something serious.

One thing you could try is to go in to a massage therapist for an hour deep tissue massage. This might help or it might not. It will only cost you about $50.00 and will feel good regardless.

o.k. this is going to sound off the wall, but it is, nevertheless, something to consider. in vedic/hindu practice it is said that there is an energy that initially resides at the base of the spine. in some fortunate folks who don't even practice the appropriate techniques, and in many more who do, this "kundalini" energy rises up the spine to produce potent benefits in the long run. this phenomenon would be unknown, of course, to 99.5% of western doctors. i would research "kundalini" and see what you think. if this turns out to be your situation you are quite fortunate. the rising of the kundalini is very helpful for aiding in experiencing higher states of consciousness in a truly meaningful way. for some it happens gently and without pain or much fanfare. for others it is otherwise, and can be quite painful. so do the research and also check out www.sahajayoga.com which deals with kundalini. best of luck! btw you might try to find a practitioner of ayurvedic medicine(east indian) who would probably have some knowledge of this. :-) also, i just remembered, quite a few years ago, i had an interesting "kundalini experience" when suddenly it felt as though a lightening bolt shot up my spine. it wasn't painful, it took about 2 seconds to happen, and i went into a very altered state. since then i've had much less dramatic experiences along similar lines.

There is something wrong and your body is telling you, you need to see a doctor asap. Don't mess around with pain, it does not get better if you have been suffering this long.
