The 2 biggest companys in the microprocessor market right now are AMD and Intel... heres a summary of each companys product lines:

intel:

Old processors: 286, 386, 486sx, 486dx, 486dx2, 486dx4
- These range from 0 to 100MHz and are very old and obsolete processors now. Some of them are still used in small embedded applications...

Pentium, Pentium 2, Pentium 3 and Pentium 4
- These were intels flagship processors, pentium 4 being the latest and most powerfull of them all.

Pentium D
- This is a Dual core model of the pentium 4 processor. It has 2 processing cores and is capable of performing 2 instructions simultaneously instead of just one.

Pentium M
- A mobile processor line designed for laptops and small computers.

Core, Core 2, Core 2 Duo
- This is intels latest offering. They are all based around a new lower power core so that they run with better performance and less heat dissipation. Less heat, means less cooling required. WHich means the PC doesn't consume as much power. The duo models are also dual-cored.

Xeon
- Intel offers this up as their server line of processors. They are used in high end servers and main frames.

Celeron
- Celeron chips tend to have a bad name. They are cheeper, but they tend not to perform as well as standard pentium 4's or other chips. They have less cache (memory) and they throw off more heat. But: consider this, if you are looking for a value chip that performs well enough to surf with, this would be the chip to go with. Others may disagree...

AMD:

Athlon
- AMD's first major processor release to compete with the intel monster. Most athlons are equivelent in performance with the corresponding intel chip, but older amd chips tended to use more power, and throw off more heat.

Duron
- AMD's second offering

AthlonXP
- A newer revision of the athlon chip.

Sempron
- one of the newest chips offered from AMD.

Athlon 64
- This was the first retail 64 bit processor. Everything else has been 32 bit, and this was viewed as a huge step forward by AMD, even if the software market has taken a long time to catch up.

Athlon 64 X2
- This was the dual core version of the athlon 64 chip.

Hope this helps.

Intel makes two models, Pentium and Celeron. They have upgraded the Pentium through 2,3, and 4. The higher the number the more recent the chip. The Celeron is a cheaper version of the Intel that has less memory build into it. They also make the smaller Pentium-M (for moblie) to fit in laptops.

The other major microprocessor manfuacturer is the British company AMD. They also have several models but off hand I can not tell you the lastest or greatest.

AMD is British? It's American rite??

How about Intel Centrino rite now in Market?

Intel and Amd do the same thing...microprocessor....both of them compete each other. The latest the goodest.
