There is not really a latest edition. Windows Vista is the latest microsoft operating system. The Best Windows xp you can get it is with Windows XP Professional W/Service Pack 2

If you bought a legit copy of pro, then Windows Update will bring it up to the latest version. Essentially, you want to have Service Pack 2.
However, make sure you need pro first - it doesn't have much extra that is required for standard home use.

As there is only one version of Windows XP sold. Once installed, you update to the the latest by going to Microsoft.com and downloading SP2 for free.

Doesn't matter much. What you buy in the store needs upgrading by the windows update site anyway.
BTW, windows site may have it cheaper than you can get it in the stores. compare.
