Yes, chocolate is a poison to both dogs and cats. Stick to doggie and kittie treats for them.

Only pure chocolate will kill or make very sick dog. Milk Chocolate will not hurt them if a small amount. Too much milk chocolate will give them diarrhea. This was explained to us by the vet when our dog got into chocolate left on the counter. The cat has shown no interest in chocolate so can't help you there.

Chocolate
It's becoming more widely known that chocolate is very toxic to both cats and dogs. Theobromine is the offending substance here. Janet Tobiassen Crosby, D.V.M. has an excellent article on the symptoms, effects, and treatment of chocolate toxicity.
So dont feed chocloate to either one

A cat won't usually eat enough chocolate to do harm. It is poisonous to them too if they have a great quantity for their size.
Dogs will consume chocolate (and a lot of other things) in quantities great enough to cause death.

Yes, my vet told me there is a chemical in chocolate that can kill a cat or dog if they consume enough of it. He said that it wouldn't take much to do so. Your best bet is to keep it away from your pets.
