Speaking in tongues is spiritual masturbation, feels good but doesn't do anything for any one else. It doesn't make any one any holier, or do anything that great.

Man, a lot of uneducated, close minded posts here. Many people are closed to the thought of speaking in tongues because they don't understand it. It is a gift given when you accept the baptism of the Holy spirit, after you accept your salvation. Just as Christians come down on atheists for not having faith because they have not yet witnessed the glory of the lord, the Christians don't have faith that it is a biblical gift offered to all Christians, because they have not yet experienced it. Many people assume that speaking in tongues means you need to have an interpreter. It doesn't. Biblicaly, it is a way to pray to our lord, and become closer to Him. Thus, people becoming closer to God means Holier people, and the answer is YES!

I think if more Christian operated in the gifts of the spirit, God's church would be a holier institution. The Bible says that tongues is a less desirable gift than prophecy. If we had Christians in church practicing prophecy, receiving wisdom and words of knowledge, speaking in tongues, interpreting tongues, and listening for who God wants to heal, then the church would be much holier (meaning they would be more faithful to God or "set apart" for God's purpose because they would be open to receiving that purpose).

I don't think so. Only because it would only mean people would be speaking in tongues. Speaking in tongues does not guarantee that a person or group of people would be holier than they previously were prior to speaking in tongues. If there was an interpreter there who told the church what was said in tongues and the church as a group and as individuals obeyed in love THEN it would result in a holier institution. My point, I guess, is obvious: speaking in tongues alone does not get the results you ask about. Obeying what was said in tongues would get the holy institution results.

I like to think of it in a different way: if more members were holier than more of them would speak in tongues. Now, speaking in tongues in my opinion means speaking in a different language; receiving that gift from the Lord so that the gospel would be preached to everybody. I don't think that speaking in tongues would make the church any holier though. It's all about the members of the church and what kind of lives they live. And if it's the church of Christ than it would be holy anyway.

No. It isn't good to speak in tongues without an interpreter. It is not a sign of holiness.
